Microsoft & NSA ADVISORY

RUN WINDOWS UPDATE NOW!

During the last two weeks, the NSA has joined Microsoft in issuing an alert to all users of Windows operating systems from XP to Windows 7.

On May 14, 2019, Microsoft actually released patches for Windows XP, Vista and 7, Server 2003 and 2008 in an effort to mitigate the threat to these operating systems.

It’s been codenamed “BlueKeep”, and it’s estimated that nearly 1 million Windows systems are at risk until the patches are performed through Windows Update

The vulnerability was found in the Remote Desktop Protocol. The exploit can be utilized to load ransomware into a computer and it can spread on a network to other vulnerable systems on that network.

I know most of my clients are still on Windows 7 and Windows 10, with some rare instances of medical systems that have XP embedded into the machine. I am not sure about the threat to those devices, but manufacturers can be contacted to check.

Though this exploit appears to affect users in larger companies, disaster prevention has me concerned for my clients that don’t do the Windows Update regularly. “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”, as the saying goes.

Even if you are on Windows 10, please go to the updates section and see if there are any updates available for your system.

I can come by and check on the systems in your office or home during the next few days.
